Xmas speech
Good evening, parents, students, teachers,
A few weeks ago, I stumbled upon a photo of a balancing rock called Kummakivi, from a small town in Finland. It was such a simple image: a large stone resting delicately on another one, almost as though it defied gravity.
At first, I found myself wondering: How is that even possible? But there it stood, steady and grounded, a reminder that balance can exist even in what seems impossible.
So, the longer I looked at the image, the more it resonated with me: life often feels like that rock. We’re constantly balancing—between responsibilities and rest, between constant striving and simply being. Sometimes, it feels like everything in our lives is on the verge of tipping over.
Analyzing the photo and trying to understand how it is possible, I realized that equilibrium doesn’t come from adding more or doing more. It comes from simplicity. That balancing rock finds its stability not because of something elaborate but because of the basic foundation beneath it.
And this is how we have continuously operated here. We believe that simplicity is strength. We focus on what matters the most: creating a space where students can learn, grow, and thrive. We rely on the basics—strong relationships, meaningful lessons, responsibility, and a commitment to respect, kindness, and care.
No need for fancy celebrations or extravagant displays to make an impact.
At this time of year, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of big parties, extravagant gifts, and the pressure to make everything “perfect.” But the truth is, what makes any celebration meaningful isn’t how much we spend or how grand it is—it’s the simple things and gestures—sitting around a table with loved ones, sharing laughter and stories. The warmth of a heartfelt “thank you” or the kindness of helping someone who needs it.
We aim to teach this to our students, too: life’s biggest joys come from the smallest, simplest moments. A genuine smile. Time spent with friends. A word of encouragement.
Students: as you perform tonight, I hope you feel proud of the effort you’ve put into this evening. Remember that balance in life doesn’t come from trying to do everything but from focusing on what truly matters.
Parents: thank you for your constant support, not only for your children but also for our community. Your ability to prioritize what’s important—your time, your help, your love—shows your children how to build balance in their lives.
So, this is the lesson of that balancing rock—it’s not about complexity or perfection. It’s about finding strength in simplicity. As we celebrate this evening and during the festive season ahead, let’s reflect on the simple joys we might often overlook: a conversation, a quiet moment, a shared meal – the foundations of a life in balance.
So, let’s enjoy the talents of our students. Thank you for being here, for being part of this school community, and for supporting what truly matters.
